International Francophonie Day

Celebrate the French language and Francophone culture

International Francophonie Day or in French 'Journée internationale de la Francophonie' takes place every March 20 to celebrate the French language and Francophone culture.

There are estimated to be over 270 million French speakers in the world and the date is marked by the International Organization of La Francophonie's 77 member states.

The date celebrates the signing of the Niamey Convention in Niger on March 20 1970. This convention established the Agence de Coopération Culturelle et Technique, the precursor to the International Organization of La Francophonie.
